This is a standard variety for the at-home and market gardener alike. Also known as Improved Commodore, this species produces heavy yields over an extended growing season. Plus, the plump, fleshy pods have an excellent flavor.
Rich in lutein, the nutrient that helps lower cholesterol AND assist with eye health, this variety of spinach has four times the beta carotene as broccoli. An excellent source of antioxidants, Bloomsdale Spinach is rich in protein, fiber, Vitamins A and C, as well as calcium, iron, and folic acid.
These have been a staple of American gardens since before the 1970s. It can be steamed, pickled, or boiled. But the biggest part of its appeal is it’s especially good for canning. Even the tops can be served fresh or cooked.
This cool season vegetable grows up to 7 inches long. But what’s even better is it can thrive in a variety of climate zones.
8-9 inches long in maturity, this dark green cucumber is resistant to many of the vegetable’s regular diseases. Plus, the fact that it’ll keep its size and shape even under poor weather conditions makes it the ideal cucumber for your seed vault.
Great as a garnish or in winter dishes, the tender, crinkled leaves of this variety are very cold hardy, rich in Vitamin A, and really quite delicious.
With frilly leaves that are tender and long, this lettuce makes great salads. It’s a quick-growing variety, but it’s also slow to bolt. In fact, this variety was designed to supply millions of pounds of fresh lettuce to the Great Lakes’ residents during the dead of winter.
Not wanting vines that could reach up to six feet high—as in regular Snap Peas, growers developed the Sugar Ann Pea to give them their desired bush plant variety.
With a mild, earthy flavor and a subtle sweetness, this variety of radish is available from late winter through early spring.
One of the most productive of the darker skinned zucchinis, this variety produces firm straight fruits, which reach their peak when less than 6 inches tall.
